We are deeply honored to become the custodians of the Jim Marchese Photography Collection and to help preserve the work and legacy of this extraordinary photographer.
A New York native and graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Jim built a wide-ranging career as a photographer, with work appearing in publications including Life, Fortune, Scientific American, and Rolling Stone, as well as in major advertising campaigns. But for Springsteen fans, Jim is perhaps best known for the remarkable access he had to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band during the European leg of The River Tour in 1981. Traveling with the band across Europe, Jim photographed not only performances, but soundchecks, travel, backstage moments, and the quieter spaces in between, creating an unusually intimate visual record of the band at a pivotal moment in its history.
Those photographs have continued to shape the visual history of Springsteen and the E Street Band for decades. Jim’s images have appeared on Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band Live/1975–85, Tracks, and numerous other Springsteen projects. Dozens of his photographs were included in The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, and his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad.
What makes Jim’s photographs so special, however, is not simply what he had access to, but what he saw. His images capture the energy of the stage alongside moments of humor, exhaustion, friendship, anticipation, and reflection. In remembering Jim after his passing in July, Bruce noted that Jim had documented the band’s “nervousness, celebration and triumph” during its first major European tour: a wonderful description of the humanity that comes through in his work.
We are grateful that Jim’s collection will have a permanent home at the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music, where it will be cared for and preserved for future generations. Just as importantly, we look forward to putting this remarkable collection to good use, through exhibitions, research, educational programs, publications, and other opportunities to share Jim’s photographs and the stories they preserve with the public. Becoming the custodians of a photographer’s life’s work is both a privilege and a responsibility, and we are honored to help ensure that Jim’s extraordinary eye, and the moments he captured, will continue to be seen, studied, and enjoyed for years to come.
