Remembering Jim Marchese

The Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music is saddened to learn of the passing of photographer Jim Marchese, whose remarkable images helped document an important chapter in Bruce Springsteen’s career and whose generous donation of photographs has enriched our collection for future generations. Perhaps best known for serving as Springsteen’s official photographer during the 1981 European tour, Marchese created intimate, behind-the-scenes and performance images that captured not only unforgettable moments onstage, but also the humanity of the artists behind the music. His work stands as a powerful reminder that photographers are among the most important historians of our time. Through their lenses, fleeting moments become part of our shared cultural memory, preserving the people, performances, and stories that might otherwise be lost. We are grateful for Jim’s generosity, his artistry, and his commitment to ensuring that these moments would be preserved for scholars, students, and music fans alike. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and admired him.
