The Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music at Monmouth University is a proud sponsor of National History Day. Our Director of Curatorial Affairs has hosted a History Day program on campus since 2016, welcoming middle and high school students from across the region to present original research projects exploring topics in American and world history.
National History Day is a year-long academic program that engages students in historical inquiry, analysis, and creative interpretation. Each year, students choose a topic related to a national theme and conduct in-depth research using primary and secondary sources. They then present their findings through documentaries, exhibits, performances, research papers, or websites. The program encourages young people not only to learn history, but to practice the work of historians—asking questions, examining evidence, and telling meaningful stories about the past.

Supporting History Day reflects the core mission of the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music. American music is deeply intertwined with American history, giving voice to the struggles, hopes, and everyday lives of people across the country. From folk and gospel to rock and hip-hop, songs often serve as historical documents—capturing the spirit of their moment and helping us understand the experiences of those who lived it.
As Bruce Springsteen has said, “The past is never the past. It is always present.” Through their research and storytelling, History Day students explore exactly that idea: how the past continues to shape the world we live in today.
By sponsoring History Day alongside the Department of History and Anthropology, the Center is proud to support the next generation of researchers, storytellers, and engaged citizens—and to encourage young people to discover how history, music, and culture connect us all.
