How do we preserve and interpret an art form meant to be heard\, performed\, and experienced – and how have music museums changed the way we understand American history and culture? \nFor the Third Annual President’s Lecture on Music History and Contemporary America\, Robert Santelli will explore the history and evolution of music museums in the United States\, drawing on decades spent at the forefront of the field. From the emergence of institutions dedicated to preserving the legacies of artists and genres to the development of museums that use music as a lens through which to understand broader American history\, Santelli will examine how the field has grown\, changed\, and reimagined what a music museum can be. \nDrawing on his own experiences helping to build and lead major music institutions such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, GRAMMY Museum\, and Woody Guthrie Center\, Santelli will offer a unique insider’s perspective on the opportunities (and challenges) of collecting\, preserving\, exhibiting\, and interpreting music history. DESCRIPTION:Released on Bruce Springsteen’s stark 1982 album Nebraska\, “Atlantic City” tells the story of a man caught between economic desperation and the promise of a new beginning. Against the backdrop of a changing Atlantic City\, Springsteen creates a world of gambling\, organized crime\, debt\, love\, and uncertainty\, following a narrator who sees increasingly few options for building the life he wants. The result is a song that is at once deeply rooted in New Jersey and part of a much larger American story about risk\, reinvention\, and what happens when opportunity seems just out of reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, characters\, and imagery of “Atlantic City\,” placing the song against the real-life transformation of the city following the legalization of casino gambling in the 1970s. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses Atlantic City as both a specific place and a symbol of hope and desperation; consider the narrator’s relationship with his unnamed partner and the choices he makes as his circumstances narrow; and discuss the song’s recurring ideas of death\, rebirth\, chance\, and the American Dream. SUMMARY:Teacher Tuesdays Presents: From Regulation to Learning - The Power of Music in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Teacher Tuesdays is a new monthly professional development series designed to engage and inspire educators through the lens of American music and its cultural impact. Held once per month\, each session will explore a different theme—ranging from history and social movements to songwriting\, identity\, and interdisciplinary teaching strategies—while providing participants with practical tools they can bring back to their classrooms. Programs will feature guest speakers\, behind-the-scenes access to exhibitions and collections\, and opportunities for collaboration with fellow educators. Participants will receive a certificate for 2 hours of professional development\, making Teacher Tuesdays both a meaningful and rewarding way to connect classroom learning with the power of music. Held 6-8PM in the Center’s Powell Soundstage. \nIn this session\, we will explore how an understanding of brain development\, regulation\, relationships\, and readiness to learn can inform everyday classroom practices. Educators will learn how students’ neurological and emotional states can influence their ability to attend\, engage\, connect\, and learn—and how simple classroom experiences can help support regulation. \nA central focus will be music as an everyday classroom intervention. Through rhythm\, movement\, songs\, musical routines\, and intentional listening\, educators can use music to support regulation\, attention\, transitions\, connection\, memory\, and engagement. \nOur guest presenter for this program is Dr. Laura Sharp. Dr. Sharp has more than 30 years of experience in the field of mental health\, with a career spanning work with individuals across the lifespan. Her greatest professional passion\, however\, has always been school-based mental health and the opportunity to support the students and educators who shape our schools and communities. \nThroughout her career\, Laura’s work has deepened her belief in the remarkable resiliency of the human spirit. This belief has inspired her to explore\, develop\, and share innovative approaches to strengthening the neurological\, emotional\, and relational well-being of both students and educators. She is passionate about translating what we know about the developing brain into practical strategies that can be used every day in schools. \nLaura holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is a Licensed Psychologist. She is also certified in School Psychology\, School Counseling\, and Pupil Personnel Supervision. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Veterans Day\, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music presents the story of the V-Discs of WWII….\n\nImagine the biggest performing artists of the day recording their most popular hits\, and new compositions\, for free\, for members of the United States Armed Forces to enjoy\, for free. Several artists with ties to NJ\, like William J. “Count” Basie\, Frank Sinatra\, Louis Prima\, Tommy Tucker\, and scores of other music legends did just this over a roughly 6 year period during and just after World War II in what was called the V-Disc program. These records\, mailed to troops around the globe from 1943- 1949\, were supposed to be destroyed following World War II – but some survived.\n\nPresented by Melissa Kozlowski\, Director of Curatorial Affairs.

Yet its soaring chorus and arena-sized sound led many listeners to hear it as a straightforward patriotic anthem.\n\nAs part of our Veterans Day programming\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, recording process\, and public reception of “Born in the U.S.A.” Participants will explore how Springsteen uses irony\, character\, and narrative voice to challenge listeners’ assumptions about patriotism\, national identity\, and the American Dream.
