SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Thunder Road”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1975 as the opening track on Born to Run\, “Thunder Road” has become one of Bruce Springsteen’s most beloved songs—a sweeping story of youth\, escape\, uncertainty\, and the promise of something better. Through the characters of Mary and an unnamed narrator\, Springsteen transforms a front porch\, a car\, and an open road into symbols of possibility\, while leaving us to wonder whether the future his characters imagine is truly within their reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, imagery\, characters\, and evolution of “Thunder Road\,” placing the song within the larger story of Born to Run and Springsteen’s career at a pivotal moment in 1975. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses place\, movement\, and cinematic imagery to create a vivid narrative world; consider the song’s complicated relationship with ideas of escape and the American Dream; and trace how the song developed through early drafts\, alternate lyrics\, and performances. Along the way\, we’ll ask what Mary and the narrator are really running toward—or away from—and consider a question that has helped make “Thunder Road” so enduring: Is this ultimately a song of hope\, desperation\, or both?\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. Through guided analysis\, historical context\, archival materials\, recorded performances\, and audience discussion\, participants will examine how Springsteen uses language\, imagery\, character\, and narrative to tell stories about work\, family\, community\, faith\, justice\, identity\, and the American experience.\n\nEach session focuses on a single song or closely related group of songs\, exploring their origins\, evolution\, and enduring relevance. Together\, attendees will discover how Springsteen’s songs function not only as popular music\, but also as poetry\, social history\, and a uniquely American form of storytelling.\n\nWhether you are a lifelong fan or new to Springsteen’s work\, The Lyric Lab offers an opportunity to listen more closely\, think more deeply\, and engage with one of the most influential bodies of songwriting in modern American culture.

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Pride Month\, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to a special panel discussion exploring the many ways music helps individuals and communities express identity\, build understanding\, and inspire change. The conversation will feature Spencer Battiest\, acclaimed Seminole musician and actor; Felipe Rose\, original Native American member of the iconic Village People and a pioneering figure in LGBTQ and Indigenous visibility in popular music; and Danielle “Redbird” Marrone\, Jersey Shore singer-songwriter and advocate whose music explores themes of hope\, resilience\, and community. \nTogether\, the panelists will reflect on their artistic journeys\, the importance of authentic representation\, and the ways music can foster connection across differences. Each panelist has contributed artifacts to exhibitions currently on view at the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music\, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage directly with the people behind the stories featured in our galleries. \nFollowing the panel\, guests will enjoy a performance by Adrian Matthias Stevens and Sean Querino Snyder\, a dynamic Two-Spirit couple who have emerged as powerful voices and role models within Indigenous communities and the broader LGBTQ+ movement. \nAfter the events in our Powell Soundstage\, guests will enjoy a curator-guided tour highlighting objects connected to the panelists and the broader stories of Indigenous\, LGBTQ+\, and other underrepresented voices in American music. \nAdmission is free\, but advance registration is required. Co-sponsored by Hard Rock International. \nSpencer Battiest\nSpencer Battiest (Seminole/Choctaw) is a Native American singer-songwriter\, producer\, and actor from Hollywood\, Florida. Rooted in the traditions of the Hollywood Seminole Indian Reservation\, his musical journey evolved from tribal hymns to modern pop\, rock\, and R&B. In 2013\, he made history as the first American Indian artist signed to Hard Rock Records\, later releasing his debut EP\, “Stupid in Love.” \nIn 2017\, Spencer and his brother Doc Native earned an MTV VMA for their powerful anthem “Stand Up/Stand N Rock #NoDAPL\,” propelling their voices onto a national stage. His career has since expanded with acclaimed singles\, music videos like “Dream\,” and a venture into musical theatre through “Distant Thunder.” Celebrated for his artistry\, Spencer received his second Native American Music Award in 2022 and has performed at major cultural and national events\, including ceremonies honoring Native American veterans. In 2024\, he was awarded the Harvey Milk Visibility Medal by the Harvey Milk Foundation. \nMost recently\, in September 2025\, Spencer joined Indigenous supergroup The Mag 7 to open the Global Citizen Festival in front of 60\,000 in Central Park\, NYC\, preceding Cardi B and Shakira. In November 2025\, he and Doc Native performed a medley of their work for the NBA Champion OKC Thunder halftime show. In 2026\, Battiest was awarded with a special congressional recognition by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for his outstanding and invaluable service to the community and for creating a more inclusive world for LGBTQ+ individuals and Floridians. \nToday\, Spencer Battiest continues to inspire worldwide audiences with his dynamic performances\, original music\, and messages of hope\, resilience\, and cultural pride. See more here. \nFelipe Rose\nFew entertainers can claim a vibrant career spanning over four decades\, but Felipe Rose stands as a shining example of enduring talent and commitment in the entertainment industry. From his early days performing ballet on the prestigious stage of Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in NYC\, Felipe’s passion for the arts was evident. In 1977\, his life took a transformative turn when he co-founded the legendary disco group The Village People with French producer Jacques Morali and lead singer-songwriter Victor Willis. The Village People skyrocketed to global fame\, selling over 150 million records worldwide with timeless hits like “Macho Man\,” “Y.M.C.A.\,” and “In the Navy.” \nAfter four decades with The Village People\, Felipe chose to leave the group in 2017 following a lengthy legal battle over its name and brand. Undeterred by the challenges\, he embarked on a solo journey. Felipe Rose isn’t just a disco icon; he’s a relentless innovator and advocate\, continuously exploring new avenues for his art and passions. He mentors emerging artists\, ensuring that the rhythm of disco and the messages of equality and love continue to inspire. Inspired by the spirit of the classic Jersey Shore music scene\, Redbird writes songs for outsiders\, advocates\, and anyone who believes music still has the power to challenge\, heal\, and unite. \nRedbird\, Danielle Marrone\, is currently President of the Pinelands Cultural Society/Albert Music Hall.
