SUMMARY:Springsteen in Long Branch Gallery Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:LONG BRANCH – The Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center is proud to present a special exhibition in collaboration with Monmouth University and the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. This exhibit honors Bruce Springsteen by spotlighting his formative years in Long Branch and the local roots of his iconic album “Born to Run\,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary on August 25. The exhibition opens to the public on August 18\, with an opening reception on August 19 at 6 p.m. \n  \n\n\n\nWhile living in West End in Long Branch\, Bruce Springsteen wrote “Born to Run” — the album that solidified his place as a creative force in rock and roll and launched him to worldwide fame. Fittingly\, the exhibition features an entire section dedicated to West End in the 1970s\, highlighting its lasting impact on Springsteen’s life and music. Visitors will also get a glimpse into Bruce’s surfing days along the Jersey Shore\, shedding light on the local culture and experiences that helped shape his early artistic voice. \n  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features rarely seen posters\, photographs and “Born to Run” promotional materials\, along with iconic artifacts\, including a green drum set from Bruce’s early band\, Earth\, and a one-of-a-kind\, exact replica of the guitar seen on the “Born to Run” album cover\, offering fans a rare glimpse of the instruments that accompanied him on his rock n’ roll journey. \n  \n\n\n\nAdding to the experience\, the exhibition features an immersive interactive element: each visitor will receive a vintage-style Long Branch postcard\, adorned with early photos of Bruce\, to share a personal memory or reflection about the rock legend. At the close of the exhibition\, these collected memories will be preserved in the Bruce Springsteen Archives (which is set to open its new home on the Monmouth University campus in 2026) ensuring that fans’ voices become part of his enduring story. \n  \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the city that helped shape a rock ‘n’ roll legend. We invite the community to explore the exhibition\, discover Long Branch’s influence on “The Boss\,” and take pride in the vital role our city played in his early journey. \n  \n\n\n\n“Bruce Springsteen is one of the most iconic and influential musicians to have ever lived and we are proud of his roots here in Long Branch. Not many people know the importance of his time spent in Long Branch and how it shaped specifically the “Born to Run” album\, ultimately propelling his career. We want to thank Monmouth University and the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music for this once in a lifetime exhibit\,” Mayor Pallone said. \n  \n\n\n\n“’Born to Run’ is unquestionably one of the greatest rock albums of all time\,” added Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. “That Bruce wrote the album in Long Branch\, just a few blocks from where the Archives’ new home is being built\, only adds to the excitement of celebrating its importance.” \n  \n\n\n\n“This exhibit deepens our shared commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of the Jersey Shore and the music that has defined generations\,” said Monmouth University President Patrick F. Leahy. “We are proud to partner with the City of Long Branch to highlight the creative spirit rooted in this community and its influence on American music. \n  \n\n\n\nThe Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center will host a variety of programs throughout the exhibition\, including a Bruce Springsteen song open mic night\, a presentation on his years in Long Branch\, and a storytelling event. For questions\, call the LBACC at 732-222-7000 x 2050 or follow the City of Long Branch social media accounts. \n  \n\n\n\n*The City of Long Branch is located in Monmouth County\, New Jersey. Learn more at longbranch.org. If you would like more information about this event\, please contact Lindsay DeAngelis at 732-571-5645 or ldeangelis@longbranch.org. \n  \n\n\n\n*The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music preserves the legacy of Bruce Springsteen and celebrates the history of American music and its diversity of artists and genres. Our mission is two-fold. The Springsteen Archives serves as the official repository for materials related to Springsteen and the E Street Band\, including photographs\, historic memorabilia\, oral histories\, and more. The Center for American Music explores American music more broadly. We accomplish this by producing exhibitions\, concerts\, and educational programming that explores and honors the cultural impact of American music past\, present\, and future. SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Thunder Road”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1975 as the opening track on Born to Run\, “Thunder Road” has become one of Bruce Springsteen’s most beloved songs—a sweeping story of youth\, escape\, uncertainty\, and the promise of something better. Through the characters of Mary and an unnamed narrator\, Springsteen transforms a front porch\, a car\, and an open road into symbols of possibility\, while leaving us to wonder whether the future his characters imagine is truly within their reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, imagery\, characters\, and evolution of “Thunder Road\,” placing the song within the larger story of Born to Run and Springsteen’s career at a pivotal moment in 1975. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses place\, movement\, and cinematic imagery to create a vivid narrative world; consider the song’s complicated relationship with ideas of escape and the American Dream; and trace how the song developed through early drafts\, alternate lyrics\, and performances. Along the way\, we’ll ask what Mary and the narrator are really running toward—or away from—and consider a question that has helped make “Thunder Road” so enduring: Is this ultimately a song of hope\, desperation\, or both?\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. Through guided analysis\, historical context\, archival materials\, recorded performances\, and audience discussion\, participants will examine how Springsteen uses language\, imagery\, character\, and narrative to tell stories about work\, family\, community\, faith\, justice\, identity\, and the American experience.\n\nEach session focuses on a single song or closely related group of songs\, exploring their origins\, evolution\, and enduring relevance. Together\, attendees will discover how Springsteen’s songs function not only as popular music\, but also as poetry\, social history\, and a uniquely American form of storytelling.\n\nWhether you are a lifelong fan or new to Springsteen’s work\, The Lyric Lab offers an opportunity to listen more closely\, think more deeply\, and engage with one of the most influential bodies of songwriting in modern American culture.

SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Atlantic City”
DESCRIPTION:Released on Bruce Springsteen’s stark 1982 album Nebraska\, “Atlantic City” tells the story of a man caught between economic desperation and the promise of a new beginning. Against the backdrop of a changing Atlantic City\, Springsteen creates a world of gambling\, organized crime\, debt\, love\, and uncertainty\, following a narrator who sees increasingly few options for building the life he wants. The result is a song that is at once deeply rooted in New Jersey and part of a much larger American story about risk\, reinvention\, and what happens when opportunity seems just out of reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, characters\, and imagery of “Atlantic City\,” placing the song against the real-life transformation of the city following the legalization of casino gambling in the 1970s. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses Atlantic City as both a specific place and a symbol of hope and desperation; consider the narrator’s relationship with his unnamed partner and the choices he makes as his circumstances narrow; and discuss the song’s recurring ideas of death\, rebirth\, chance\, and the American Dream. Along the way\, we’ll consider the song’s place within Nebraska\, compare Springsteen’s original recording with later performances and interpretations\, and ask a central question: Is “Atlantic City” ultimately a song about hope—or about what people are willing to risk when hope is running out?\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Born in the U.S.A.”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1984\, “Born in the U.S.A.” became one of Bruce Springsteen’s biggest hits—and one of the most misunderstood songs in American popular culture. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and its aftermath\, the song tells the story of a working-class veteran struggling to find his place in the country he served. Yet its soaring chorus and arena-sized sound led many listeners to hear it as a straightforward patriotic anthem.\n\nAs part of our Veterans Day programming\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, recording process\, and public reception of “Born in the U.S.A.” Participants will explore how Springsteen uses irony\, character\, and narrative voice to challenge listeners’ assumptions about patriotism\, national identity\, and the American Dream. Along the way\, we’ll compare early acoustic versions of the song with the final recording\, discuss its role in American political discourse\, and consider why its message remains as relevant today as it was more than forty years ago.\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog.
