SUMMARY:The “Basie Boogie” Goes to War: V-Discs and WWII
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Veterans Day\, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music presents the story of the V-Discs of WWII….\n\nImagine the biggest performing artists of the day recording their most popular hits\, and new compositions\, for free\, for members of the United States Armed Forces to enjoy\, for free. Several artists with ties to NJ\, like William J. “Count” Basie\, Frank Sinatra\, Louis Prima\, Tommy Tucker\, and scores of other music legends did just this over a roughly 6 year period during and just after World War II in what was called the V-Disc program. These records\, mailed to troops around the globe from 1943- 1949\, were supposed to be destroyed following World War II – but some survived.\n\nPresented by Melissa Kozlowski\, Director of Curatorial Affairs.

SUMMARY:A Conversation With Bottom Line Co-Owner Allan Pepper and Co-Author Billy Altman
DESCRIPTION:Join Bottom Line co-owner Allan Pepper and veteran music journalist Billy Altman as they discuss their new book Positively Fourth and Mercer: The Inside Story of New York’s Iconic Music Club\, The Bottom Line\, a behind-the-scenes look at the history and legacy of the 400-seat Greenwich Village nightspot that during its 1974-2004 run impacted the careers of Bruce Springsteen\, Dolly Parton\, Darlene Love\, David Johansen\, Uncle Floyd\, and countless others. \nModerated by local radio personality Jerry Treacy\, the event will also feature a gallery of rarely seen photographs by longtime club photographer Peter Cunningham\, as well as Q & A’s and book signings by the two authors. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\, and the program begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15. \n*    *    * \nWhen Allan Pepper and his childhood friend and partner Stanley Snadowsky opened The Bottom Line in 1974\, they created a small club with a big goal: putting the artists and audiences first by building a creative\, intimate environment with a focus on what transpired on stage. “The Bottom Line was never just a venue\,” says Pepper. “Stanley and I envisioned it as a new concept for presenting live music.” \nIt turned out to be all that – and more. During its existence\, The Bottom Line was host to countless legendary moments\, including: \n\nBruce Springsteen’s career-making Born to Run stand in 1975\nDolly Parton’s first solo New York City performances in 1977\nHarry Chapin’s milestone 2\,000th concert in 1981\nThe long-running 1980s/’90s series “In Their Own Words\,” bringing together unique singer-songwriter combinations to perform and discuss their craft\nThe late 1990/2000s annual holiday-themed “Downtown Messiah”\n\n“We were always confident we could make our vision a reality\,” says Pepper\, “But what we had no way of predicting was the lasting impact this little club would have on New York’s music scene or the history of popular music. That’s the story we are telling with this book.” \nThose details are as much a part of Positively Fourth and Mercer as the recollections from performers\, patrons\, and staffers. \n“Allan and I wanted to present more than a collection of anecdotes\,” says Altman. “Once we started working on this project\, it quickly became clear we were outlining a rich narrative of cultural and creative energy. Positively Fourth and Mercer will appeal to readers with a passion for music\, and to anyone attracted to a story of friendship\, ambition\, and the importance of following a dream.”

SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Born in the U.S.A.”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1984\, “Born in the U.S.A.” became one of Bruce Springsteen’s biggest hits—and one of the most misunderstood songs in American popular culture. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and its aftermath\, the song tells the story of a working-class veteran struggling to find his place in the country he served. Yet its soaring chorus and arena-sized sound led many listeners to hear it as a straightforward patriotic anthem.\n\nAs part of our Veterans Day programming\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, recording process\, and public reception of “Born in the U.S.A.” Participants will explore how Springsteen uses irony\, character\, and narrative voice to challenge listeners’ assumptions about patriotism\, national identity\, and the American Dream. Along the way\, we’ll compare early acoustic versions of the song with the final recording\, discuss its role in American political discourse\, and consider why its message remains as relevant today as it was more than forty years ago.\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. Through guided analysis\, historical context\, archival materials\, recorded performances\, and audience discussion\, participants will examine how Springsteen uses language\, imagery\, character\, and narrative to tell stories about work\, family\, community\, faith\, justice\, identity\, and the American experience.\n\nEach session focuses on a single song or closely related group of songs\, exploring their origins\, evolution\, and enduring relevance. Together\, attendees will discover how Springsteen’s lyrics function not only as popular music\, but also as poetry\, social history\, and a uniquely American form of storytelling.\n\nWhether you are a lifelong fan or new to Springsteen’s work\, The Lyric Lab offers an opportunity to listen more closely\, think more deeply\, and engage with one of the most influential bodies of songwriting in modern American culture.

SUMMARY:Fan Stories: A Monthly Oral History Program
DESCRIPTION:For more than fifty years\, Bruce Springsteen’s music has been a part of the lives of listeners around the world— a soundtrack of first concerts and road trips\, of friendships and family traditions\, of difficult moments\, and of celebrations. Those experiences are an important part of the history that the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music seeks to preserve. \nSpringsteen Fan Stories is a monthly oral history program inviting fans to sit down with one of the Center’s trained docents to share their own Springsteen stories. These informal\, audio-recorded conversations will capture memories of concerts\, favorite songs and albums\, encounters with Bruce and the E Street Band\, friendships formed through fandom\, collecting traditions\, and the many ways Springsteen’s music has intersected with fans’ lives. \nInterviews will take place at the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music and\, with participants’ permission\, become part of the Center’s growing historical record.
