I’m looking forward to sharing the story behind Sun City to kick off the Center’s new film series and talking about why those lessons still matter today.” \nTickets for The Making of Sun City are $50 and will go on sale on Thursday\, August 13 at noon online at  https://springsteencenter.org/.

SUMMARY:The Soundtrack of Resilience: Music and 9/11
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks\, music played a powerful role in helping Americans mourn\, remember\, and begin to heal. This multimedia presentation explores how both existing songs and new music resonated deeply with the public in this somber period—from the emotional impact of Whitney Houston’s stirring national anthem to the inspirational message of “Hero” by Mariah Carey. At the center of the discussion is The Rising\, in which Bruce Springsteen captured the grief\, courage\, and hope that defined the months following the attacks.

SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Thunder Road”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1975 as the opening track on Born to Run\, “Thunder Road” has become one of Bruce Springsteen’s most beloved songs—a sweeping story of youth\, escape\, uncertainty\, and the promise of something better. Through the characters of Mary and an unnamed narrator\, Springsteen transforms a front porch\, a car\, and an open road into symbols of possibility\, while leaving us to wonder whether the future his characters imagine is truly within their reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, imagery\, characters\, and evolution of “Thunder Road\,” placing the song within the larger story of Born to Run and Springsteen’s career at a pivotal moment in 1975. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses place\, movement\, and cinematic imagery to create a vivid narrative world; consider the song’s complicated relationship with ideas of escape and the American Dream; and trace how the song developed through early drafts\, alternate lyrics\, and performances. Along the way\, we’ll ask what Mary and the narrator are really running toward—or away from—and consider a question that has helped make “Thunder Road” so enduring: Is this ultimately a song of hope\, desperation\, or both?\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. Through guided analysis\, historical context\, archival materials\, recorded performances\, and audience discussion\, participants will examine how Springsteen uses language\, imagery\, character\, and narrative to tell stories about work\, family\, community\, faith\, justice\, identity\, and the American experience.\n\nEach session focuses on a single song or closely related group of songs\, exploring their origins\, evolution\, and enduring relevance. Together\, attendees will discover how Springsteen’s songs function not only as popular music\, but also as poetry\, social history\, and a uniquely American form of storytelling.\n\nWhether you are a lifelong fan or new to Springsteen’s work\, The Lyric Lab offers an opportunity to listen more closely\, think more deeply\, and engage with one of the most influential bodies of songwriting in modern American culture.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Our Curator - The Midnight Special: The Secret Prison History of American Music (2026) with Colin Asher
DESCRIPTION:In American popular music\, we often glorify rebellious artists and “outlaws.” But in THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL: The Secret Prison History of American Music [W. W. Norton & Company; June 30\, 2026; $29.99 hardcover]\, Colin Asher\, author of a critically acclaimed biography of Nelson Algren\, Never a Lovely So Real\, tells a deeper story about the criminal justice system’s impact on our musicians\, explored through compelling portraits of five artists whose careers span the twentieth century. \nOpening with folk and blues artist Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter\, who was made to perform wearing prison clothes\, Asher traces the intertwined histories of music and incarceration\, from Southern prison farms of the Jim Crow era\, through the heroin-driven mid-century drug wars that villainized a generation of jazz artists\, and to our present era of mass incarceration. \nAsher shows how the suggestion of criminality has often benefited white artists\, while prosecutions often hurt Black musicians. Comparing the divergent trajectories of jazz pianist Elmo Hope with country singer Johnny Cash\, Asher examines how violent and discriminatory policing stifled Hope’s career and led to the creation of his album Sounds from Rikers Island (1963)\, while forgiveness and lenience brought us Cash’s masterpiece At San Quentin (1969). \nWith keen musical analysis and sociological insight\, THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL examines key themes in culture and criminal justice\, from the movement for prison reform that allowed soul musician Ike White to stage thrilling concerts while locked up and record his album Changin’ Times (1977)\, to the crushing cultural weight of mass incarceration a generation later. Closing with Tupac Shakur’s Me Against the World (1995) and stories of music in prisons today\, THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL recounts how prisons occasionally incubate talent but more often shorten careers and distort the public’s perception of musicians and their value to society. \nAn urgent book about the ways music can affirm an individual’s sense of humanity in dehumanizing circumstances\, THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL writes the history of prisons into American music—a story as important as it is overlooked. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nColin Asher is the author of the critically acclaimed Never a Lovely So Real. His work has been featured in the Believer\, the Baffler\, the New Republic\, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. He lives in Brooklyn\, New York.\nConversations with our Curator” is a free\, monthly web series featuring BSCAM Director of Curatorial Affairs\, Melissa Kozlowski\, in conversation with researchers and writers exploring new perspectives in American music history. SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Atlantic City”
DESCRIPTION:Released on Bruce Springsteen’s stark 1982 album Nebraska\, “Atlantic City” tells the story of a man caught between economic desperation and the promise of a new beginning. Against the backdrop of a changing Atlantic City\, Springsteen creates a world of gambling\, organized crime\, debt\, love\, and uncertainty\, following a narrator who sees increasingly few options for building the life he wants. The result is a song that is at once deeply rooted in New Jersey and part of a much larger American story about risk\, reinvention\, and what happens when opportunity seems just out of reach.\n\nIn this session of The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, characters\, and imagery of “Atlantic City\,” placing the song against the real-life transformation of the city following the legalization of casino gambling in the 1970s. Participants will explore how Springsteen uses Atlantic City as both a specific place and a symbol of hope and desperation; consider the narrator’s relationship with his unnamed partner and the choices he makes as his circumstances narrow; and discuss the song’s recurring ideas of death\, rebirth\, chance\, and the American Dream. Along the way\, we’ll consider the song’s place within Nebraska\, compare Springsteen’s original recording with later performances and interpretations\, and ask a central question: Is “Atlantic City” ultimately a song about hope—or about what people are willing to risk when hope is running out?\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. SUMMARY:Teacher Tuesdays Presents: From Regulation to Learning - The Power of Music in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Teacher Tuesdays is a new monthly professional development series designed to engage and inspire educators through the lens of American music and its cultural impact. Held once per month\, each session will explore a different theme—ranging from history and social movements to songwriting\, identity\, and interdisciplinary teaching strategies—while providing participants with practical tools they can bring back to their classrooms. Programs will feature guest speakers\, behind-the-scenes access to exhibitions and collections\, and opportunities for collaboration with fellow educators. Participants will receive a certificate for 2 hours of professional development\, making Teacher Tuesdays both a meaningful and rewarding way to connect classroom learning with the power of music. Held 6-8PM in the Center’s Powell Soundstage. \nIn this session\, we will explore how an understanding of brain development\, regulation\, relationships\, and readiness to learn can inform everyday classroom practices. Educators will learn how students’ neurological and emotional states can influence their ability to attend\, engage\, connect\, and learn—and how simple classroom experiences can help support regulation. \nA central focus will be music as an everyday classroom intervention. Through rhythm\, movement\, songs\, musical routines\, and intentional listening\, educators can use music to support regulation\, attention\, transitions\, connection\, memory\, and engagement. \nOur guest presenter for this program is Dr. Laura Sharp. Dr. Sharp has more than 30 years of experience in the field of mental health\, with a career spanning work with individuals across the lifespan. Her greatest professional passion\, however\, has always been school-based mental health and the opportunity to support the students and educators who shape our schools and communities. \nThroughout her career\, Laura’s work has deepened her belief in the remarkable resiliency of the human spirit. This belief has inspired her to explore\, develop\, and share innovative approaches to strengthening the neurological\, emotional\, and relational well-being of both students and educators. She is passionate about translating what we know about the developing brain into practical strategies that can be used every day in schools. \nLaura holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is a Licensed Psychologist. She is also certified in School Psychology\, School Counseling\, and Pupil Personnel Supervision. She is the co-founder and CEO of Lotus Educational Services\, LLC\, where she works to strengthen the capacity of educators and school communities to foster resilience\, connection\, and well-being. \nGrade Levels: All \nSubject Areas: All \nProgram Format: lecture/discussion/hands on activities

SUMMARY:The “Basie Boogie” Goes to War: V-Discs and WWII
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Veterans Day\, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music presents the story of the V-Discs of WWII….\n\nImagine the biggest performing artists of the day recording their most popular hits\, and new compositions\, for free\, for members of the United States Armed Forces to enjoy\, for free. Several artists with ties to NJ\, like William J. “Count” Basie\, Frank Sinatra\, Louis Prima\, Tommy Tucker\, and scores of other music legends did just this over a roughly 6 year period during and just after World War II in what was called the V-Disc program. These records\, mailed to troops around the globe from 1943- 1949\, were supposed to be destroyed following World War II – but some survived.\n\nPresented by Melissa Kozlowski\, Director of Curatorial Affairs.

SUMMARY:The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab Presents: “Born in the U.S.A.”
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1984\, “Born in the U.S.A.” became one of Bruce Springsteen’s biggest hits—and one of the most misunderstood songs in American popular culture. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and its aftermath\, the song tells the story of a working-class veteran struggling to find his place in the country he served. Yet its soaring chorus and arena-sized sound led many listeners to hear it as a straightforward patriotic anthem.\n\nAs part of our Veterans Day programming\, we will examine the lyrics\, historical context\, recording process\, and public reception of “Born in the U.S.A.” Participants will explore how Springsteen uses irony\, character\, and narrative voice to challenge listeners’ assumptions about patriotism\, national identity\, and the American Dream. Along the way\, we’ll compare early acoustic versions of the song with the final recording\, discuss its role in American political discourse\, and consider why its message remains as relevant today as it was more than forty years ago.\n\nModerated by Director of Curatorial Affairs Melissa Kozlowski\, in conjunction with YOU\, the audience.\n\nAbout The Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music invites audiences to look beyond the music and explore the stories\, characters\, themes\, and ideas that have made Bruce Springsteen one of America’s most important songwriters.\n\nThe Bruce Springsteen Lyric Lab is an ongoing lecture and discussion series that takes a close look at individual songs and recurring themes throughout Springsteen’s catalog. Together\, attendees will discover how Springsteen’s lyrics function not only as popular music\, but also as poetry\, social history\, and a uniquely American form of storytelling.\n\nWhether you are a lifelong fan or new to Springsteen’s work\, The Lyric Lab offers an opportunity to listen more closely\, think more deeply\, and engage with one of the most influential bodies of songwriting in modern American culture.
