SUMMARY:Music America: Iconic Objects from America’s Music History at Grammy Museum Mississippi
DESCRIPTION:Following its February debut at the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum in Austin\, Texas\, Music America: Iconic Objects From America’s Music History will open to the public at GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi on Friday\, Sept. 20. With close to 100 objects representing the best of American music\, the exhibit – curated by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music (BSACAM) at Monmouth University in West Long Branch\, NJ – tells the story of how music has informed\, interpreted\, and inspired our national identity since it was founded nearly two-and-a-half centuries ago. This exhibit is made possible by Visit Mississippi and Mississippi Humanities Council with additional support from Ergon\, Inc. and South Delta Planning and Development District. The education programs for this exhibit are made possible by the Maddox Foundation.\n“Music has been deeply engrained in the fabric of American history since the nation was founded almost 250 years ago\,” said Emily Havens\, Executive Director of GRAMMY Museum Mississippi.\n“The Music America exhibit helps tell the complex story of American music by featuring objects from artists of all genres\, including those who put music from the Delta on the map. Together\, these artists and the songs they’ve made describe our national soundtrack. From rock and roll and country\, to the blues\, jazz\, and other genres\, visitors will learn how music has shaped and interpreted our national identity.” \n“In curating this exhibit\, we didn’t just want to focus on the history of rock and roll in America\, or country\, or blues\, we wanted to tell the story of how all of these genres together have shaped our identity as a nation\,” said Robert Santelli\, BSACAM Executive Director. “With the Delta being at the heart of so much music history\, we are thrilled to be bringing the Music America exhibit to the GRAMMY Museum in Mississippi. There are so many stories to be told\, specifically from Delta musicians alone\, and we can’t wait to share those with visitors to Cleveland.”\nOn display through April 13\, 2025\, the exhibit will feature iconic objects from artists such as Lead Belly\, Sam Cooke\, Bob Dylan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Jimi Hendrix\, Billie Holiday\, Buddy Holly\, Whitney Houston\, B.B. King\, Elvis Presley\, and Frank Sinatra. SUMMARY:Second Annual President’s Lecture on Music History and Contemporary America
DESCRIPTION:WEST LONG BRANCH\, N.J. – The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music (BSACAM) at Monmouth University is pleased to announce the second annual President’s Lecture on Music History and Contemporary America\, to be held on Thursday\, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. in Pollak Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University\, 400 Cedar Ave.\, West Long Branch\, New Jersey. The event\, which is free and open to all\, will feature acclaimed historian Sean Wilentz. Wilentz\, George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History at Princeton University\, will present “‘I Don’t Write Protest Songs’: Bob Dylan\, 1963.” \n\n\n\nAs Wilentz notes\, “To this day\, Bob Dylan’s early work gets tagged as political or topical or protest music\, despite his own protests about it. He has always refused to be categorized as a protest singer or a political spokesman or anything else other than a songwriter and performer. ‘I don’t write protest songs\,’ he declared to the audience at a Monday night hootenanny at Gerde’s Folk City in 1962. Yet that renunciation served as Dylan’s introduction to his first-ever public performance of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind\,’ a song that within months would become an anthem of the burgeoning civil rights movement. Although he spoke only for himself\, the shifting politics of Dylan’s early output expressed a strong point of view that was essential to his emergence in Greenwich Village\, perhaps the most rapid leap into genius of any artist in modern times. That development accelerated early in 1963\, led to an extraordinary burst of creativity beginning in the middle of the year\, and culminated in a landmark concert at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 26\, the end of the beginning of Dylan’s long career.” \n\n\n\nWilentz’s lecture\, drawing on rare and in some cases uncirculated recordings from the time\, will assess the tension and energies behind this exceptional formative period in Dylan’s art. Copies of his book\, “Bob Dylan in America\,” will be available for purchase and signing after his talk. Hosted by Monmouth University President and BSACAM Board of Directors Chair Dr. Patrick F. Leahy\, this second installment in the annual lecture series comes on the heels of the release of the Dylan biopic\, “A Complete Unknown.” In Leahy’s words\, “I am so pleased to welcome Professor Wilentz as the featured speaker for our Second Annual Lecture on Music History and Contemporary America. As one of the leading voices in the study of U.S. political and social history\, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music\, Professor Wilentz’s insights will undoubtedly enrich our understanding of Dylan’s influence on the connections between music\, politics\, and the social forces that have shaped our nation’s history.” \n\n\n\nAnd as BSACAM Curator Melissa Ziobro notes\, “We at the BSACAM are thrilled we can continue to bring nationally recognized scholars to our campus for the benefit of our students and the entire community\, both on campus and beyond.” While the event is free and open to the public\, advance registration is required. For group reservations\, email Ziobro directly at mziobro@monmouth.edu.

SUMMARY:The History and Performance Practices of the Negro Spiritual
DESCRIPTION:In advance of our 2nd Annual Move On Up Gospel Sing-Off & Celebration on Saturday\, May 10th\, join us for a free\, virtual program with Dr. LaToya Lain on the history and performance practices of the Negro Spiritual on Wednesday\, May 7th at 7pm. \nSpirituals\, folk songs originating from the enslaved African community\, were vehicles for resistance\, solace\, and identity. This lecture delves into their evolution\, from creation on plantations to their adaptation in concert settings and their influence on modern genres like jazz and gospel. Further\, it addresses the ongoing debate surrounding the performance of spirituals by non-African American singers\, questioning issues of appropriation and the authenticity of dialect in performance. \nDr. LaToya Lain\, a New Orleans native\, is an acclaimed singer praised for her “rich” and “captivating” voice\, an Associate Professor of Voice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and sings with the Metropolitan Opera Extra Chorus. LaToya has performed worldwide\, including in two GRAMMY-winning casts\, Porgy and Bess and Fire Shut Up in My Bones at The Met. At Carolina\, she teaches “The History of Negro Spirituals” and she has created a lecture-recital based on the Slave Narratives of the 1930s Federal Writer’s Project. She has performed Narrative of a Slave Woman at numerous American Colleges and Universities and globally.  She is currently curating and recording spirituals with the State of North Carolina’s Department of Natural and Cultural History to be featured in historic sites across the state. \nPre-register here: https://monmouth.zoom.us/meeting/register/BWfCdaU0SfWhGge5LawCtw

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Move On Up Gospel Sing-Off & Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:Registration Now Open for the 2nd Annual Move On Up Gospel Sing-Off & Celebration!\n .\n\n\nMove on Up! will take place on Saturday\, May 10th at 2pm in Pollak Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University.  Admission is free.  The winning choir will receive a $10\,000 cash prize to be used to improve any aspect of its ensemble.  The runner-up will receive a $5\,000 prize. A team of judges will select six entries to participate in a “sing-off” to determine the winner. Participants in this year’s sing-off will be announced April 1st. \n“Move on Up! celebrates our state’s wonderfully rich tradition of gospel music\,” said Springsteen Archives Programs Manager\, Jeri Houseworth\, the event’s producer.  “Gospel began in Black churches and is a vital part of African-American religious culture.  Gospel is also a foundation of American popular music.  Its influence can be heard in R&B\, soul\, rock\, and the blues.” \nAny New Jersey-based church or community choir can register for the event online.  Registration includes information about the choir\, plus a one song video not longer than five minutes.  Videos need not be professionally produced; videos recorded on cell phones or I-Pads are acceptable. \n“Move on Up! is less a competition than a celebration\,” added Robert Santelli\, executive director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music.  “It’s a showcase of gospel talent\, a tribute to gospel music\, and a chance to award prize money to be used to elevate the contemporary sounds of the music.” \nThe Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music serves as the official repository for the music of Bruce Springsteen\, plus photographs\, periodicals\, oral histories\, rare recordings\, films\, and artifacts related to Springsteen and The E Street Band.  The Center for American Music produces museum exhibitions\, symposia and seminars\, teacher workshops\, concerts\, internships\, and various other public programs to promote and celebrate the many forms of American music and their impact on our culture and national identity. \n

SUMMARY:Sinners of the Pine Barrens Talk with Pine Barrens Historian Paulie Wenger
DESCRIPTION:Music plays a haunting role in Ryan Coogler’s 2025 horror hit Sinners\, where sound serves as a conduit not just to the divine\, but to something far darker.\nBut long before the film’s release\, the Pine Barrens of New Jersey had its own tale of supernatural music. In this talk\, Pine Barrens historian Paulie Wenger explores the life and lore of Sammy Giberson\, the legendary fiddler whose talent was said to rival (and perhaps even outmatch) the Devil himself.\nJoin us for a journey through backwoods ballads\, ghostly gigs\, and the enduring power of music to stir both the soul and the shadows.\nSinners of the Pine Barrens \nPre-register here: https://monmouth.zoom.us/meeting/register/XHJFqL1bTA2cVAdBu2FtCA#/registration

SUMMARY:Springsteen in Long Branch Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:LONG BRANCH – The Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center is proud to present a special exhibition in collaboration with Monmouth University and the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. This exhibit honors Bruce Springsteen by spotlighting his formative years in Long Branch and the local roots of his iconic album “Born to Run\,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary on August 25. The exhibition opens to the public on August 18\, with an opening reception on August 19 at 6 p.m. \n  \n\n\n\nWhile living in West End in Long Branch\, Bruce Springsteen wrote “Born to Run” — the album that solidified his place as a creative force in rock and roll and launched him to worldwide fame. Fittingly\, the exhibition features an entire section dedicated to West End in the 1970s\, highlighting its lasting impact on Springsteen’s life and music. Visitors will also get a glimpse into Bruce’s surfing days along the Jersey Shore\, shedding light on the local culture and experiences that helped shape his early artistic voice. \n  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features rarely seen posters\, photographs and “Born to Run” promotional materials\, along with iconic artifacts\, including a green drum set from Bruce’s early band\, Earth\, and a one-of-a-kind\, exact replica of the guitar seen on the “Born to Run” album cover\, offering fans a rare glimpse of the instruments that accompanied him on his rock n’ roll journey. \n  \n\n\n\nAdding to the experience\, the exhibition features an immersive interactive element: each visitor will receive a vintage-style Long Branch postcard\, adorned with early photos of Bruce\, to share a personal memory or reflection about the rock legend. At the close of the exhibition\, these collected memories will be preserved in the Bruce Springsteen Archives (which is set to open its new home on the Monmouth University campus in 2026) ensuring that fans’ voices become part of his enduring story. \n  \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the city that helped shape a rock ‘n’ roll legend. We invite the community to explore the exhibition\, discover Long Branch’s influence on “The Boss\,” and take pride in the vital role our city played in his early journey. \n  \n\n\n\n“Bruce Springsteen is one of the most iconic and influential musicians to have ever lived and we are proud of his roots here in Long Branch. Not many people know the importance of his time spent in Long Branch and how it shaped specifically the “Born to Run” album\, ultimately propelling his career. We want to thank Monmouth University and the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music for this once in a lifetime exhibit\,” Mayor Pallone said. \n  \n\n\n\n“’Born to Run’ is unquestionably one of the greatest rock albums of all time\,” added Bob Santelli\, Executive Director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. “That Bruce wrote the album in Long Branch\, just a few blocks from where the Archives’ new home is being built\, only adds to the excitement of celebrating its importance.” \n  \n\n\n\n“This exhibit deepens our shared commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of the Jersey Shore and the music that has defined generations\,” said Monmouth University President Patrick F. Leahy. “We are proud to partner with the City of Long Branch to highlight the creative spirit rooted in this community and its influence on American music. \n  \n\n\n\nThe Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center will host a variety of programs throughout the exhibition\, including a Bruce Springsteen song open mic night\, a presentation on his years in Long Branch\, and a storytelling event. For questions\, call the LBACC at 732-222-7000 x 2050 or follow the City of Long Branch social media accounts. \n  \n\n\n\n*The City of Long Branch is located in Monmouth County\, New Jersey.
